Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Medical College & Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India Introduction: Language areas of brain show a beautiful anatomico-functional correlation. It has been often assumed that the interhemispheric asymmetry of Sylvian fissure and perisylvian cortex is the basis of hemispheric dominance for language. The lateral sulcus is one of the earliest-developing sulci of the human brain. Materials And Methods: 60 formalin fixed cadaveric brains irrespective of sexes were studied in the department of Anatomy. The total length of sylvian fissure on the superolateral surface till the posterior sylvian point was noted bilaterally. Among the other measurements taken were the lengths of anterior ascending, anterior horizontal and posterior limb of lateral sulcus till posterior sylvian point on the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Observation and Results: The mean of the total length of the lateral sulcus on the left side is 8.48 which is larger than the right side which is 8.39.The mean of the anterior horizontal rami on right side (1.97) is greater than left side (1.96). On the other hand the mean value of left anterior ascending ramus 2.41 is greater than the mean value of right anterior ascending ramus 2.37. The mean value of posterior limb of sylvian sulcus is also greater on the left side i.e. 6.43 than on the right side i.e.6.23.All measurements are in cms. Conclusion: The Sylvian fissure in this study is longer on the left side than the right which has been proved in previous studies. To correlate this structural asymmetry with the functional localization of speech and language calls for further studies.

Topography of Sylvian Fissure and Central Sulcus as Neurosurgical Landmarks: an Anatomical Study Using Cadaveric Specimens in Iran

Background and Aim: In the present study, the cerebral surface landmarks in human fresh autopsy specimens were investigated. Methods and Materials/Patients: Totally, 37 fresh adult autopsy human brain specimens from the Rasht Forensic Medicine Center were enrolled. Four specimens were excluded because of some traumatic injuries to cerebral cortex. Demographic information of all cases was obt...

Radiologic changes of the aging brain and skull.

Computed tomographic (CT) studies during life reveal the involutionary changes in the brain found in postmortem studies. Beginning about the fourth decade, gradual widening of the third ventricle, sylvian and interhemispheric fissures, superficial sulci, and basal cisterns occurs. Enlargement of the lateral ventricles is most striking after the sixth decade of life. Regression of the brain with...

Analysis of the cerebral cortex in holoprosencephaly with attention to the sylvian fissures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Analysis of specific features in the brain of patients with holoprosencephaly (HPE) may clarify normal and abnormal brain development and help predict outcomes for specific children. We assessed sulcal and gyral patterns of cerebral cortex in patients with HPE and developed a method of grading brain development. METHODS Neuroimaging studies (75 MR imaging, 21 CT) of 96 ...

deficits. There was no history of head injury or surgery. Plain radiographs of skull showed irregular calcifications in the left temporal region (Figure 1). Computed tomography (CT) of brain revealed a heterogeneous extra axial lesion in the anterior aspect of left temporal fossa and left middle cerebral artery cistern, showing calcification, soft tissue and fat density. Multiple tiny fat dropl...

Utility of the orbitocranial approach for clipping of anterior communicating artery aneurysms: significance of dissection of the interhemispheric fissure and the sylvian fissure.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the importance of sufficient dissection of the interhemispheric and sylvian fissures, an orbitocranial approach was used for clipping of ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms. PATIENTS AND METHODS From January 1998 through March 2009, 41 patients underwent surgery for subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by rupture of an anterior communicating artery aneurysm. Th...
